Thai Maritime Navigation Co.Ltd. (TMN) is a State Enterprise under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Transport and Communications. TMN was founded on June 22, 1940 during the war in Europe between the Allies and the Axis powers. Since the war resulted in a higher demand for shipping in Asia, the Thai Government decided to establish its own national shipping line with the help of Colonel Pra'ya Boripan Yuttakit (Pao Pienleut), Rear Admiral Luang Sintusongkramchai (Sin Kamonnawin), Luang Naraubetmanit ( Sanguan Chutatemi), Luang WichitWatakan ( Chit Ratanapreuda) , Pra' worawongteu Pra'ong Chao Wannawaitayakon, Mr. Walat Osatanon, and Captain Luang TamrongNawasawat ( Tawan Tarisawat) . The Government held 100 % of the equity in the company, whose registered capital was originally 6.2 million baht, was later increased in 1965 to 117,612,000 baht, and has remained at this level until now.
Besides its symbolic value as Thailand' s national shipping line, TMN has a number of functions to perform, namely transporting goods by sea from one country to another, Warehouse and Wharf servicing, vessels for rent and handling the cargo through chartering the spaces of other vessels, and acting as a shipping agent and representative for shipping companies. In performing these tasks, TMN earns foreign exchange and income for the State, reduces the country's foreign trade and current accounts deficits, prevent disruptions of maritime trade during periods of instability such as in wartime, supports the armed forces' transportation needs in ensuring Thailand's security, acts as the main proponent of State maritime policies, strengthens the country's import and export potential, and offers opportunities for Thais to train and acquire knowledge in maritime navigation.
